Maintenance of the nervous system & behaviour

ESPCI-UMR 8249

Axe 1 : Génomique, cellules humaines, reprogrammation et neuro-organoïdes

Axe 2 : Approches quantitatives à l'exploration du comportement et de la cognition

Team research topics:

  • Development of motor function in the embryo: The goal of this unit is to elucidate how motor function emergence is brought about by the developing nervous system and its genetic make-up. For this, we comprehensively characterize the neuronal activity timeline pattern and the corresponding distinct molecular profile (transcriptome) of the well-described neurons that drive early movements in the Drosophila’s embryo.
  • Maintenance of motor circuits across post-embryonic life stages: Earlier-born neurons that drive the motor development in the embryo transit through distinct developmental life stages. Here, we track these neurons individually, from embryo to adult to determine the molecular mechanisms through which they maintain their phenotypic and functional features during the transition.
  • Developmental origin of neurodegenerative movement disorders. Neurodegenerative disorders are characterized by the progressive loss of phenotype or function of neurons, and factors underlying these disorders pre-exist in the embryo. We are testing the hypothesis that genetic forms of these disorders emerge from development.

Main techniques used:

We combine genetic manipulations in Drosophila, functional imaging, transcriptomics, thermo- and optogenetics with quantitative behavioural approaches.
