Summary:
Previously considered incurable, genetic retinal diseases have seen significant progress thanks to the identification of numerous involved genes, advancements in gene therapy, and the emergence of new visual restoration technologies like retinal prostheses and optogenetics. The work carried out within the scope of the IHU FOReSIGHT, particularly at the Vision Institute, the CHNO des Quinze-Vingts, and the Rothschild Ophthalmological Foundation, in partnership with many start-ups, has progressed from the laboratory to clinical trials, often the first in the world. This challenging journey has also highlighted the importance of defining, in collaboration with affected individuals, evaluation methods that consider the impact of visual impairment on daily life, thus aligning this technological research with the expectations it generates.
